Begin with read piano chords
Read a chord symbol from left to right: root, quality, extensions or alterations, and bass note when a slash is present.
This guide builds the subject in a sequence: orient the written symbols, connect them to keyboard distance, compare related structures and finish with tasks that can be checked from the visible answer. The aim is a reusable reference, not a claim that reading one page guarantees a learning outcome.
Vocabulary and visual landmarks
A tonic or root is the named reference note. A scale degree describes position relative to a tonic; an interval combines a numbered letter span with a quality; a chord formula selects several of those degrees. On the keyboard, groups of two and three black keys provide position landmarks but do not decide theoretical spelling.
The original diagram pairs highlighted keys with a text line. Read both: the shape makes spacing visible, while the note names preserve accidentals and diatonic function.
Build the answer step by step
First state the root or tonic. Next apply the interval or degree formula. Then assign the required letter names before adding accidentals. Finally compare each resulting pitch with the keyboard. Reversing that process—choosing the nearest key label first—can produce plausible sound with incorrect notation.
Use E♭maj7/G means an E♭ major-seventh chord with G in the bass. as a worked model. Change one variable at a time so the reason for each new note remains visible.

- Apply accidentals to reach the target pitches.
- Check the keyboard and text answer together.
Symbols, extensions and exceptions
Chord and scale shorthand compresses several decisions. A chord symbol may include a root, quality, added or extended degree, alteration, omission and bass. A scale name may imply a seven-note parent, a five-note degree selection or a directional convention.
Pentatonic scales therefore use explicit parent-degree maps rather than consecutive stored letters. Chromatic displays are labelled ascending-sharps and descending-flats conventions instead of claiming one context-free spelling. Classical melodic minor distinguishes ascent from the common natural-minor descent.
Worked comparisons
Compare C major, C minor and C suspended-fourth while holding the root and fifth constant. Compare C major, A natural minor and C natural minor to separate relative from parallel relationships. Compare C–F♯ with C–G♭ to hear the same equal-temperament distance while reading two different interval names.
Each comparison isolates one theoretical decision. The diagrams are generated from first-party data and use no copied notation or copyrighted repertoire.
Common errors to catch
A slash bass may identify an inversion or a non-chord bass; inspect the actual tones.
Other warning signs include repeated letter names inside a seven-note diatonic scale, skipped letters in a triad, extreme accidentals in ordinary practical keys, or a pitch-class match presented as one definitive chord despite missing tones.
Read the root before the suffix
The first letter names the chord root. An accidental immediately after it belongs to that root, so E♭m begins on E♭ and F♯7 begins on F♯. Only after locating the root should you read the remaining characters as quality, extension, alteration or bass information. This order matters because the same suffix transposes to a different set of written letters on every root.
A bare letter such as C normally means a major triad: C–E–G. Cm explicitly lowers the third to C–E♭–G. C5 is different again: it states a root and fifth without a third, so it does not establish major or minor quality. When notation is compact, expand the symbol into a formula before touching the keyboard.
Ten symbols decoded
C, Cm, Cdim, Caug, Csus2, Csus4, C6, Cm6, C7 and Cmaj7 are ten distinct instructions. Their respective formulas begin 1–3–5; 1–♭3–5; 1–♭3–♭5; 1–3–♯5; 1–2–5; 1–4–5; 1–3–5–6; 1–♭3–5–6; 1–3–5–♭7; and 1–3–5–7. The seventh suffix alone conventionally means a dominant seventh, not a major seventh.
Read those formulas against C to obtain C–E–G, C–E♭–G, C–E♭–G♭, C–E–G♯, C–D–G, C–F–G, C–E–G–A, C–E♭–G–A, C–E–G–B♭ and C–E–G–B. This comparison keeps the root fixed and reveals exactly which degree each symbol changes.
Extensions, added notes and omissions
An extension continues a stack of thirds beyond the seventh. C9 therefore implies the dominant-seventh foundation C–E–G–B♭ plus D, whereas Cadd9 adds D to the major triad without implying B♭. Cmaj9 changes the seventh to B natural. C11 and C13 describe still larger theoretical collections, although practical voicings often omit selected inner tones.
An omission such as “no3” removes the named degree; an alteration such as ♭9 or ♯11 changes an extension rather than the basic root. Parentheses are often typographic grouping, not a different theory rule. Always distinguish a degree that is absent, a degree that is added, and a degree that is present in altered form.
Slash chords and bass notes
The part after a slash names the bass: C/E contains a C chord with E lowest, which is first inversion. C/G is second inversion. A slash note need not be a chord tone, however; C/D can describe a C harmony over D in the bass. The slash does not mean “or”, and it does not automatically create a new root.
To test a slash symbol, write the chord tones before the slash, then compare the bass with that set. If the bass is a member, name the inversion from its chord-tone position. If it is not, retain the slash-bass description and avoid forcing it into an inversion category.
Diagram reading without guesswork
A keyboard diagram should identify the displayed range, label every selected pitch and repeat the answer as text. The leftmost highlighted key is the displayed bass, but it is not automatically the theoretical root. Two diagrams can represent the same chord with different octaves, doublings and spacing.
Read a diagram in three passes: list the pitch names from low to high; reduce duplicate octave notes to find the pitch-class set; then compare the lowest pitch with the chord formula. This separates identity, inversion and voicing instead of using “shape” for all three.
Altered spellings and enharmonic traps
Correct spelling preserves interval function. D major is D–F♯–A because its third must use an F letter. Writing G♭ would place the same piano key under the wrong letter role. C augmented is C–E–G♯ because the top note is an augmented fifth; A♭ would describe a sixth letter.
Enharmonic spelling becomes especially important in diminished and augmented structures. The keyboard alone cannot decide whether a tritone above C is F♯ or G♭. Read the formula, count the required letters and only then calculate the accidental needed to reach the pitch.
A complete symbol-reading routine
For E♭maj7/G, identify E♭ as root, maj7 as a major triad plus major seventh, and G as bass. The chord tones are E♭–G–B♭–D; because G is the third, the slash requests first inversion. For Dm9/A, build D–F–A–C–E and place A in the bass, recognising a second-inversion bass within an extended chord.
For F♯m7♭5, retain F♯ as root, use a minor third, diminished fifth and minor seventh, and spell F♯–A–C–E. Do not rename C as B♯ merely because both can occur in sharp-key writing: the chord formula requires a fifth letter above F.
Reading exercises
Decode G7, B♭m, Asus4, E♭add9, Dmaj7/F♯, Am7/G, Fdim and C♯m7♭5. For each one, write the formula, spell the chord, name the displayed bass and decide whether any slash note creates an inversion. Then check the explorer one decision at a time.
A useful self-check explains why every accidental is present. If the explanation is only “that is the black key in the shape”, return to the degree letters. The goal is a repeatable reading method that survives transposition, not memorisation of one keyboard picture.
Reference exercises
Use the explorer to create three examples, write the expected notes before revealing the result, and explain any accidental by degree. Then transpose one structure and compare the new letters. Finish by printing a compact reference and checking it against the live view.
