How Scales Are Built

Understand tonic, scale degrees, whole steps, half steps and spelling.

Begin with how scales are built

A scale formula orders distances from a tonic. Diatonic scales normally use each letter name once before the octave repeats.

This guide builds the subject in a sequence: orient the written symbols, connect them to keyboard distance, compare related structures and finish with tasks that can be checked from the visible answer. The aim is a reusable reference, not a claim that reading one page guarantees a learning outcome.

Vocabulary and visual landmarks

A tonic or root is the named reference note. A scale degree describes position relative to a tonic; an interval combines a numbered letter span with a quality; a chord formula selects several of those degrees. On the keyboard, groups of two and three black keys provide position landmarks but do not decide theoretical spelling.

Build the answer step by step

First state the root or tonic. Next apply the interval or degree formula. Then assign the required letter names before adding accidentals. Finally compare each resulting pitch with the keyboard. Reversing that process—choosing the nearest key label first—can produce plausible sound with incorrect notation.

Use The major pattern W–W–H–W–W–W–H creates D–E–F♯–G–A–B–C♯. as a worked model. Change one variable at a time so the reason for each new note remains visible.

  • Write the degree or interval formula.
  • Advance through the required letter names.
  • Apply accidentals to reach the target pitches.
  • Check the keyboard and text answer together.

Symbols, extensions and exceptions

Chord and scale shorthand compresses several decisions. A chord symbol may include a root, quality, added or extended degree, alteration, omission and bass. A scale name may imply a seven-note parent, a five-note degree selection or a directional convention.

Pentatonic scales therefore use explicit parent-degree maps rather than consecutive stored letters. Chromatic displays are labelled ascending-sharps and descending-flats conventions instead of claiming one context-free spelling. Classical melodic minor distinguishes ascent from the common natural-minor descent.

Worked comparisons

Compare C major, C minor and C suspended-fourth while holding the root and fifth constant. Compare C major, A natural minor and C natural minor to separate relative from parallel relationships. Compare C–F♯ with C–G♭ to hear the same equal-temperament distance while reading two different interval names.

Each comparison isolates one theoretical decision. The diagrams are generated from first-party data and use no copied notation or copyrighted repertoire.

Common errors to catch

The same keyboard key may be written differently in another scale because its degree and letter function changed.

Other warning signs include repeated letter names inside a seven-note diatonic scale, skipped letters in a triad, extreme accidentals in ordinary practical keys, or a pitch-class match presented as one definitive chord despite missing tones.

Tonic, degrees and octave

A scale orders pitches around a tonic. Degree numbers describe each pitch’s position and function relative to that tonic, while the repeated tonic at the octave closes the one-octave reference. C and C5 may share the same pitch class but occupy different registers; degree 1 and the octave remain related endpoints.

A formula can be written as whole and half steps, semitone offsets or altered degrees. ChordMetric stores enough information to connect all three without using one notation as a substitute for correct letter spelling.

Whole steps and half steps

A half step is one semitone, the distance to the next piano key whether black or white. A whole step is two semitones. The major pattern W–W–H–W–W–W–H totals twelve semitones and places its half steps between degrees 3–4 and 7–1.

Starting on D gives D–E as a whole step, E–F♯ as a whole step and F♯–G as a half step. Continuing the same pattern produces A, B, C♯ and the return to D. The formula determines pitch distance; the degree sequence determines letters.

Diatonic spelling algorithm

For a seven-note diatonic scale, assign one successive letter to each degree before choosing accidentals. F♯ major therefore requires F♯, G♯, A♯, B, C♯, D♯ and E♯. Calling degree seven F natural would miss the leading-tone pitch; calling it F would also repeat the tonic letter.

The accidental for each degree is the difference between the target pitch class and the natural letter’s pitch class. Practical-key fixtures then guard ordinary pages against accidental outputs that indicate an inappropriate enharmonic tonic choice or an algorithm error.

Major and natural minor

Major follows W–W–H–W–W–W–H and can also be described as 1–2–3–4–5–6–7. Natural minor follows W–H–W–W–H–W–W, or 1–2–♭3–4–5–♭6–♭7 relative to the parallel major. A natural minor is A–B–C–D–E–F–G.

Relative major and natural minor share a pitch collection and signature but choose different tonics. C major and A minor are relative; C major and C minor are parallel because they retain C while changing degrees three, six and seven.

Harmonic minor

Harmonic minor raises degree seven of natural minor. A harmonic minor is A–B–C–D–E–F–G♯. The F-to-G♯ step is an augmented second: three semitones but still a second because F and G are adjacent letters.

The raised leading tone changes available harmony, particularly the dominant area. It is an alteration within the minor-key reference, not proof that the music has changed tonic or acquired a new permanent key signature.

Classical melodic minor by direction

Classical melodic minor commonly raises degrees six and seven on ascent, then uses natural minor on descent. A ascends A–B–C–D–E–F♯–G♯ and returns through G natural and F natural. The interface therefore asks for direction rather than presenting one undifferentiated list.

Jazz theory commonly treats the ascending collection as stable in both directions. That is a different convention, so the page labels the classical directional behaviour explicitly instead of claiming one universal form.

Pentatonic degree maps

Major pentatonic selects degrees 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 of major. C major pentatonic is C–D–E–G–A; F♯ major pentatonic is F♯–G♯–A♯–C♯–D♯. The skipped fourth and seventh mean stored letters must also skip those degree positions.

Minor pentatonic selects 1, ♭3, 4, 5 and ♭7. A minor pentatonic is A–C–D–E–G; E♭ minor pentatonic is E♭–G♭–A♭–B♭–D♭. Assigning five consecutive letters would create wrong names even if the piano keys sounded correct.

Chromatic direction and context

A chromatic scale includes all twelve pitch classes. Because it does not have one simple diatonic degree-letter sequence, ChordMetric displays an explicit convention: ascending output prefers sharps and descending output prefers flats. The label describes that choice rather than presenting it as a universal notation rule.

Harmonic context can require mixed spellings, naturals or repeated letters that a simple directional display does not capture. The chromatic tool is therefore a keyboard reference, not an automatic replacement for notation inside a score.

Deriving chords from a scale

Choose alternate degrees to build diatonic triads: 1–3–5, 2–4–6 and so on, wrapping within the scale while retaining spelled letters. In C major this produces C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am and B diminished. Seventh chords add one more alternate degree.

Scale comparison and practice

Write D major, D natural minor and B natural minor. The first two are parallel and reveal altered degrees around one tonic; D major and B minor are relative and reveal the same signature around different tonics. Then compare their tonic, subdominant and dominant triads.

For a non-heptatonic check, write C major pentatonic and A minor pentatonic, name the omitted parent degrees and confirm that every displayed letter corresponds to the stated degree map. Use playback only after the written prediction is complete.

Reference exercises

Use the explorer to create three examples, write the expected notes before revealing the result, and explain any accidental by degree. Then transpose one structure and compare the new letters. Finish by printing a compact reference and checking it against the live view.

  • Name every visible key and degree.
  • Explain the spelling, not only the sound.
  • Compare an enharmonic alternative and state what function changed.
