Begin with read a piano keyboard
The repeating groups of two and three black keys make every octave recognisable. C sits immediately to the left of each two-black-key group.
This guide builds the subject in a sequence: orient the written symbols, connect them to keyboard distance, compare related structures and finish with tasks that can be checked from the visible answer. The aim is a reusable reference, not a claim that reading one page guarantees a learning outcome.
Vocabulary and visual landmarks
A tonic or root is the named reference note. A scale degree describes position relative to a tonic; an interval combines a numbered letter span with a quality; a chord formula selects several of those degrees. On the keyboard, groups of two and three black keys provide position landmarks but do not decide theoretical spelling.
The original diagram pairs highlighted keys with a text line. Read both: the shape makes spacing visible, while the note names preserve accidentals and diatonic function.
Build the answer step by step
First state the root or tonic. Next apply the interval or degree formula. Then assign the required letter names before adding accidentals. Finally compare each resulting pitch with the keyboard. Reversing that process—choosing the nearest key label first—can produce plausible sound with incorrect notation.
Use Middle C is C4 in scientific pitch notation; the A above it is A4. as a worked model. Change one variable at a time so the reason for each new note remains visible.

Symbols, extensions and exceptions
Chord and scale shorthand compresses several decisions. A chord symbol may include a root, quality, added or extended degree, alteration, omission and bass. A scale name may imply a seven-note parent, a five-note degree selection or a directional convention.
Pentatonic scales therefore use explicit parent-degree maps rather than consecutive stored letters. Chromatic displays are labelled ascending-sharps and descending-flats conventions instead of claiming one context-free spelling. Classical melodic minor distinguishes ascent from the common natural-minor descent.
Worked comparisons
Compare C major, C minor and C suspended-fourth while holding the root and fifth constant. Compare C major, A natural minor and C natural minor to separate relative from parallel relationships. Compare C–F♯ with C–G♭ to hear the same equal-temperament distance while reading two different interval names.
Each comparison isolates one theoretical decision. The diagrams are generated from first-party data and use no copied notation or copyrighted repertoire.
Common errors to catch
Different systems have historically numbered octaves differently, so this site states its scientific-pitch convention.
Other warning signs include repeated letter names inside a seven-note diatonic scale, skipped letters in a triad, extreme accidentals in ordinary practical keys, or a pitch-class match presented as one definitive chord despite missing tones.
Two-black-key and three-black-key landmarks
Every C lies immediately to the left of a group of two black keys. Moving right across the white keys gives C, D and E around that group. Every F lies immediately to the left of a group of three black keys; F, G, A and B occupy the surrounding white-key positions. These landmarks repeat through the entire instrument.
Rather than counting from the far left, find the nearest black-key group and identify one anchor. From C, move by white-key letters; from F, do the same through the three-key group. This remains reliable at the shortened-looking ends of an 88-key piano.
Natural notes, sharps and flats
The white keys carry the natural letter names A through G. A sharp raises a written note by one semitone and a flat lowers it by one semitone. That means C♯ is the black key immediately to the right of C, while D♭ is the same equal-temperament key described as one semitone below D.
Not every accidental lands on a black key. B♯ is the same piano key as C, C♭ is the same key as B, E♯ is the same key as F and F♭ is the same key as E. The written name follows scale or chord function, not key colour.
Octaves and scientific pitch notation
ChordMetric uses scientific pitch notation. Each octave number changes at C: B3 is immediately below C4, and B4 immediately below C5. Middle C is C4. The A above it is A4, the 440 Hz equal-temperament tuning reference used by the generated audio.
A standard 88-key piano begins at A0 and ends at C8. It contains complete repeating octaves in the middle and partial ranges at both ends. Octave labels distinguish pitches with the same letter and pitch class at different heights; they do not change the note’s scale-degree function.
Reading enharmonic names in context
F♯ and G♭ occupy one key but carry different letter identities. In D major, F♯ is scale degree three and belongs to the two-sharp signature. In D♭ major, G♭ is scale degree four and belongs to a five-flat signature. Replacing either name indiscriminately makes the scale letters repeat or disappear.
Use the page’s isolated-key sharp/flat preference only as an orientation aid. When a chord, scale, key or interval supplies context, its spelling engine overrides that preference with degree-aware names.
The complete 88-key range
The lowest A0, B♭0 and B0 sit before the first full C-to-B octave. Seven full C octaves then lead toward C8. Pitch rises from left to right, but visual distance alone does not show rhythmic value, dynamic or harmonic function.
When using the full-keyboard view, locate C4 first, then A4, then both endpoints. This gives a central anchor, a tuning anchor and a range check. Zooming or horizontal scrolling must not remove the text label associated with any visible key.
Orientation exercises
Find every C using the two-black-key groups, then every F using the three-black-key groups. Choose one black key and name both common enharmonic spellings. Locate A4 without counting all the way from A0. Finally, identify the three notes of D major and explain why its middle key is F♯ rather than G♭.
Repeat with E♭ minor: E♭, G♭ and B♭. The keys form a visible shape, but the exercise is complete only when the three different chord letters and their interval roles can also be stated.
Reference exercises
Use the explorer to create three examples, write the expected notes before revealing the result, and explain any accidental by degree. Then transpose one structure and compare the new letters. Finish by printing a compact reference and checking it against the live view.
